Why a Pen & Sword?

Some of you may be wondering about the logo designs, why a pen and sword feature so heavily in it. We touched on the reason when the new changes to Blog Battle were first announced, but I thought it warranted another quick explanation.

BB 1

Our logo says “Inspired to Write” because Blog Battle is meant to do just that, but our logo design is inspiring in and of itself because it represents the old proverb “the pen is mightier than the sword.”

The specific phrasing of this age old adage, dating back thousands of years in various forms, is attributed to the playwright Edward Bulwer-Lytton from his 1839 play Richelieu.

It was the Cardinal’s line in the play:

True, This! —

Beneath the rule of men entirely great
The pen is mightier than the sword. Behold
The arch-enchanters wand! — itself is nothing! —
But taking sorcery from the master-hand
To paralyse the Cæsars, and to strike
The loud earth breathless! — Take away the sword —
States can be saved without it!

[emphasis mine, quote taken from wikipedia]

And as you can see from the context, the idea is that a pen, in the right hands, has power greater than a sword.BB 2 Blog Battle is meant to help us challenge ourselves to improve, to reach beyond our comfort, to encourage each other, to try new things, to be inspired, and hopefully to become powerful users of the pen where our words go out into the world and do not fly from us already wasted.

So, I hope when you look at the Blog Battle logo that you will be encouraged and inspired. Your words have the potential to change a generation, even when you write fiction. It’s an amazing thought.

Cheers!

  1. I love the logo period. I’d love it even it with a comma, question mark, or an exclamation point! I’d love it whether the old logo or the new logo. In fact, I just think the whole idea is wonderful. What a concept for inspiring people to write something, or anything, just as long as they write. Rachael, I think you’ve hit on something really quite clever.
